Ekorian Camp owners Donna and Josh Perrett were born in Kenya and share a passion for preserving and sharing the country’s natural beauty. Donna grew up in the nearby Rift Valley. After completing chef’s training in Cape Town, she spent many years managing and hosting at various camps across Kenya and Tanzania. Josh is a third-generation Laikipian, whose family grew up exploring the wild Laikipia plains and the great north, often on foot and accompanied by their beloved camel train. Josh led safaris for many years in the most remote areas of Tanzania before returning home to the familiar Laikipia plains.
Immersed in a legacy of adventurers, safari has always been more than just an experience for Donna and Josh—it’s a way of life. Their deep connection to the land ignited a passion for exploration and a profound love of nature, inspiring them to keep it as wild and untouched as possible. In 2012, this passion led them to build Ekorian’s Mugie Camp, with a vision of offering an authentic safari experience – one that blends organic luxury and sustainability with a dedicated team that focuses on what truly matters. In 2017, Josh took on the management of the Mugie Conservancy and Donna continues to manage the camp.
Josh and Donna’s three children grew up in the heart of Ekorian, with the Laikipia landscape as their playground. Their childhood experiences at the camp fostered a deep love for the wild, shaping not only their lives but also Ekorian’s Mugie Camp into a home for family safaris. This is the experience Ekorian hopes to share with your family.
Camels are part of our family’s story. In the early ’90s, Josh’s grandfather, Jasper “Japper” Evans, brought camels from Pakistan to boost milk production across Laikipia. A true pioneer, he raised over 500 camels and passed down a deep love for these hardy creatures.
Today, that legacy continues with Bobong Camels, run by Josh’s parents, Amanda and John Perrett. At Ekorian’s Mugie Camp, a small train of six camels offers guests the chance to walk wild paths and slow down. Our cameleers—seasoned, soulful, and part of the family—care for them with quiet skill and deep respect.
